The Most Ignored Part of the System

Everyone thinks about gutters. Almost nobody thinks about downspouts — until water starts doing damage. A 1,000-square-foot roof sheds over 600 gallons in a one-inch rainstorm, and every gallon comes down a downspout. If a downspout is clogged, disconnected, or dumping water two feet from your foundation, perfect gutters will not save your basement. Downspout placement is not a detail. It is the whole game.

Problems We Fix

Clogged downspouts. Leaves mat at the elbows and the top outlet until the whole thing packs solid. From outside it looks fine. Clearing and flushing every downspout is part of every cleaning we do.

Disconnected sections. Storms and time pull elbows apart. A downspout dumping a roof's worth of water straight down at the foundation concentrates damage in one spot. We reconnect and re-secure the run.

Too few downspouts. A long run with one downspout at the far end overflows in heavy rain no matter how clean it is. We add downspouts where the water actually needs to exit.

Crushed or damaged sections. Mowers, ladders, and cars in tight driveways take their toll. We replace damaged sections and match the color.

Water Too Close to the House

The classic setup: the downspout ends a foot from the foundation, water pools, the basement gets damp. The fix is drainage extensions that carry water four to six feet out, past the foundation. Simple, affordable, and it solves an astonishing number of wet-basement complaints. If your basement gets damp after heavy rain, look at your downspouts first.

How It Works

Step 1 — Free visit. We trace every downspout from gutter to ground and check flow with water.

Step 2 — Written estimate. Repairs, replacements, new downspouts, extensions — itemized. Every home is different — contact us for a free written estimate.

Step 3 — The work. Most downspout jobs take a few hours. Everything gets secured to the house properly.

Step 4 — Flow test. We run water from the gutter through each downspout and watch where it lands.

How Many Downspouts Does Your Home Need?

More than most homes have. The rule of thumb: one downspout effectively drains about 20 to 30 feet of gutter in normal rain — less on steep roofs or in the kind of violent downpours Maryland summers produce. A 50-foot gutter run with a single downspout at the far end will overflow in a thunderstorm no matter how clean it is, because the water simply can't reach the exit fast enough.

When we plan downspout placement, we look at the roof area feeding each run, not just the gutter length. Valleys concentrate water — a valley dumping a large roof section into one spot needs a downspout right there, or that spot overflows every storm. Steep roofs shed water faster, which means more downspouts, not fewer. And long runs need exits at both ends, not one heroic downspout doing all the work.

Adding a downspout is one of the highest-value gutter improvements there is: a modest job that can end chronic overflow completely. If your gutters spill at the same spot every heavy rain even when they're clean, count the downspouts — you're probably short.

Downspout Size: The Overlooked Upgrade

Standard residential downspouts are 2x3 inches, and for most homes they're fine. But on big roofs, steep roofs, or runs fed by valleys, upgrading to 3x4-inch downspouts moves dramatically more water — nearly twice the capacity — for a small difference in cost and appearance. If your gutters are clean, your downspouts are clear, and water still overflows in heavy rain, the system isn't clogged: it's undersized. Bigger downspouts are the fix, and it's a far cheaper answer than most homeowners expect.

We check sizing on every visit. It's a quick assessment — roof area, gutter size, downspout count and size — and it answers the "why does it still overflow" question definitively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does water shoot over the gutter in heavy rain even when it's clean?

Usually undersized or too-few downspouts. Clean gutters can still overflow if the water can't exit fast enough. We check downspout count and size during the visit — the fix is often adding or upsizing a downspout, not another cleaning.

Can downspouts be moved to a better spot?

Yes. We relocate downspouts to where the water actually collects — under valleys, at the low end of long runs — and patch the old outlet. Placement matters as much as count.

Do bigger downspouts look bad on the house?

Barely noticeable. The 3x4-inch profile is only slightly larger than standard, and we match the color to your gutters. Most people can't tell the difference from the ground.

How do I know if a downspout is clogged?

Watch during rain: water spilling over the gutter near a downspout, or no water coming out the bottom while the gutter above is full, means a clog. We check every downspout with water during cleanings.

How far should downspouts carry water from the house?

At least four to six feet past the foundation. Water that lands six feet out never touches your basement wall.

Can you add a downspout to a long gutter run?

Yes. We plan placement around your roof's drainage pattern so each section of gutter has an exit that can handle its water.

What about underground drains?

Buried drains have their place, but they clog, freeze, and are expensive to dig up. We recommend them only when above-ground extensions genuinely will not work. Most homes do fine with well-placed extensions.

How much does downspout work cost?

Small repairs are quick and affordable; adding downspouts or full replacements cost more. Every home is different — contact us for a free written estimate.
